5 days

March 15, 2012

Dear MoveOn member,

There are only five days left until one of the most important congressional primaries of the year.

It’s progressive champion Ilya Sheyman vs. conservative Brad Schneider in this suburban Chicago district, and it’s coming down to the wire. To send a true progressive to Congress, we’ve got to mobilize MoveOn members to get out the vote.

Our programmers have just finished a new version of our calling tool that allows you to call MoveOn members in Ilya’s district and sign them up to volunteer for the campaign. We’re hoping you can help us launch this new program and put Ilya over the top.

This is one of the most important pieces of our election plan for this year and we need Ilya supporters to test it out. Calling is easy, and you’ll be making a real difference putting Ilya on the path to victory.

If you’ve ever called MoveOn members during one of our previous campaigns, you know how much fun it can be. Your fellow MoveOn members are good folks, and many will appreciate your call. You can practice reading through the calling script, and then start calling MoveOn members.

Here’s what other MoveOn members who’ve made similar calls in the past have said about it:

"A great experience all around—I have worked on MANY campaigns, and done a LOT of phone banking, but your scripts and materials were really excellent."—Theresa L.

"Had a great time and really feel we made a difference."—Cecily K.

You don’t need to know anything special—our phone tool will walk you through the process and give you all the info you need. However, you will need to be able to be on the phone (land line or cell phone) and the Internet at the same time.

If you have any questions, the link below includes answers to frequently asked questions and a way to email other MoveOn members for help. Go ahead, click the link now to join us and get started calling for Ilya.

Thanks for all you do.

New York Needs to Create Its Health Insurance Exchange

March 13, 2012

Charles:

When Governor Cuomo released his budget proposal back in January, he included language that would create New York’s Health Insurance Exchange. It’s the critical next step in health care reform that will get health coverage for more than one million uninsured New Yorkers.

Yesterday, the State Senate put our their version of the budget. It didn’t include the Health Insurance Exchange. They’ve chosen to put politics before people.

The final negotiations on the state budget are happening right now, and we need our message to get to the Capitol immediately. New York can’t wait any longer to start this process.

Click here to send your message to your Assemblymember, State Senator, and Governor Cuomo and urge them to include the Health Insurance Exchange in the final state budget!

Once the Exchange is created, health insurance premiums could go down by as much as 66% for individuals and 22% for small businesses.

If we don’t create an Exchange that works for us, the federal government will intervene and do it for us. We need an Exchange that fits our needs.

It’s time for our leaders in Albany: the Governor, the State Senate, and the Assembly to work together to make health care policy that will help our economy, and help save lives.

Click here to send your message to the Governor, your State Senator and Assemblymember right now!

Thanks for all you do,

How are we doing?

March 12, 2012

Dear MoveOn member,

People have lots of different ideas about what MoveOn.org is, but the answer is actually quite simple: MoveOn is an organization designed to help regular people have a powerful voice in politics.

MoveOn’s power and direction come entirely from members like you. The type of work we do together and the issues that we focus on aren’t decided by MoveOn’s (small) staff, they’re decided by MoveOn members.

One of the main ways that happens is using surveys like this one.

Can you take a moment to tell us how you think MoveOn is doing and help set our course together?

Chellie Pingree says “Thank you MoveOn members”

March 10, 2012

Dear Charles,

As you may have heard, earlier this week progressive champion Chellie Pingree announced that she would run for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives rather than the U.S. Senate seat in Maine vacated by Republican Olympia Snowe.

It was a tough decision for her. Really tough—especially given the outpouring of support and encouragement she received from MoveOn members.

To say thank you to MoveOn members for the thousands of petition signatures and over $300,000 that you pledged to support a possible Senate campaign—and to make sure you know the fight is not over, she recorded this video. Click here to watch.

Thanks for all you do.

–Julia, Adam, Steven, Elena, and the rest of the team

P.S. Here’s a longer speech Chellie gave at a reception in Portland, Maine, for her constituents who encouraged her to run for Senate. If you have a few more minutes, it’s well worth watching.
