UPDATE: Tell President Obama yourself

February 17, 2012

Dear MoveOn member,

In just two days, nearly 17,000 people have signed the "We the People" version of our petition calling on President Obama to commit to vetoing the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

We only need 8,000 more signatures to guarantee a response from the White House on this issue. Can you ask your friends, family, and co-workers to sign?

Eating my words

February 16, 2012

Charles,

Good news—Ilya Sheyman’s race for Congress in Illinois’ 10th District is now in the national spotlight! Politico just called it the "first true bellwether of the cycle" for progressives.1

That means the stakes in this race have just gotten higher. If we all contribute and help Ilya win, we can elect a progressive champ over a corporate Democrat—and it’ll send a message to other candidates that if they run as fighting progressives, we’ll have their backs. Ilya is narrowly ahead in the polls, and with only 32 days until Election Day, we’ve got to make sure we have the resources to identify, persuade, and mobilize voters to support him.

We need to decide tomorrow night how many voters we can contact, and with $50,000 we can join forces with other groups and help put Ilya over the top. Please support MoveOn’s effort today:

Chip in $5 to help send this new progressive leader to Congress.

You can check out the note below about Ilya that I sent last week. Thanks—Adam

Dear MoveOn member,

When Ilya Sheyman, MoveOn’s former mobilization director, told me a year ago that he was running for Congress, I told him he was crazy.

Don’t get me wrong—I thought he’d be an amazing member of Congress. A real game changer. And I knew he was running in a Democratic district in Illinois to unseat one of the most vulnerable tea party Republicans in the country.

I knew he was a brilliant organizer—we fought side by side for health care reform and against the corporate capture of our democracy. But still, candidates this good usually don’t win in our system.

Well, I’m eating my words. With just five weeks left until the primary, he’s winning! The latest poll has him beating his wealthy Democratic primary opponent, who has a long history of donating to Republicans. Thanks to small donor contributions pouring in from around the country, Ilya is even raising more money than his opponents.

But the primary is going to be incredibly close. That’s why we’re going to contact undecided Democrats and send MoveOn members out to talk to voters;plus, we’ll bring the same approaches to other key races around the country. But we need to know whether we’ll have the resources to pull it off. Please support MoveOn’s effort today:

Chip in $5 to MoveOn’s big plan to elect Ilya Sheyman and other true progressives.

Primaries—where real progressives like Ilya face off against establishment Democrats—start in a few weeks. And once they’re over, our best opportunity to move Congress and the Democratic Party toward our progressive ideals will be over, too.

There’s no doubt that Ilya’s voice in Congress would be a game changer. I should know … I used to work with him. He’s a tenacious progressive and a bold strategist.

So when people like Ilya decide to run, we have to have their backs. We’re making our final decisions on where to spend money in the race within the next few days. Can you chip in $5 to MoveOn today so we can launch our efforts immediately?

Send a Love Letter to Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam

February 14, 2012

Charles:

This morning, I read an interesting fact: in 2010, the top 6 executives at Verizon Corporation got $46 million in compensation. $46 million! I’m sure you remember earlier this summer when Verizon workers went on strike because the company tried to force draconian concessions. Those workers are still struggling for a fair contract.

Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d write a “love letter” to Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam from the Citizen Action community. Would you like to add your name to the letter? Click here to sign on.

Dear Charles,

Your quick online vote can help progressive champion Ilya Sheyman win $20,000 for his campaign!

Ilya is running in Illinois’ 10th district primary against a corporate Democrat, and he’s one of the top vote-getters in Democracy for America’s "Grassroots All-Stars" contest. If he receives the most votes from progressives like you, he’ll win $20,000 to help his campaign.

Ilya needs just a few more votes today to make it to the final round.

Unemployed New Yorkers need jobs, not cuts

February 10, 2012

Charles-

By February’s end, nearly 3 million Americans will lose their unemployment insurance if Congress doesn’t act. Here in New York, over 200,000 unemployed workers could lose their benefits.

Instead of working to extend this lifeline that is holding our economy together, Republicans in the House are intent on pouring salt on the wound. While preaching about putting Americans back to work, they are pushing a plan destined to cost jobs and cut economic activity.

Under the Republican proposal in the House, those seeking benefits would be forced to pay for additional job training, and be subject to drug testing. These ideas will cost us more and further stigmatize unemployed workers.

It’s leaves us asking: do they really want to put America back to work?

Click here to send your Representative a message urging him or her to extend unemployment benefits!

If Congress doesn’t act, it’s all of us who will suffer. Here in New York alone, we would lose over $1.3 billion in economic activity and over 35,000 jobs – over $18 billion in economic activity nationwide.

Recent jobs numbers have shown progress. Our country is moving forward and jobs are finally being created. We can’t allow this growth to be reversed. Congress must extend unemployment insurance now.

Click here to send an email to your Representative now!

Thanks for all you do,

Karen Scharff
Executive Director
Citizen Action of New York

P.S. – Are you unemployed? If so, you’re not alone. We want to hear your story – what would happen to you if you lost these benefits? Click here to tell us your story now.
